The Effect of Simultaneously Presented Words and Auditory Tones on Visuomotor Performance

Abstract The experiment reported here used a variation of the spatial cueing task to examine effects unimodal and bimodal attention-orienting primes on target identification latencies eye gaze movements. were nonspatial auditory tone words known drive attention consistent with dominant writing reading direction, as well introducing semantic, temporal bias (past–future) horizontal dimension. As expected, past-related (visual) word gave rise shorter response left hemifield future-related right. This congruency effect was differentiated by an asymmetric performance right space following future driven left-to-right trajectory scanning habits that facilitated search times movements lateralized targets. Auditory prime alone acted alarm signal, boosting visual reducing latencies. Bimodal priming, i.e., paired tone, impaired delaying relative condition. We conclude no more effective in capturing participants’ than primes. Their contribution literature multisensory integration is discussed.
